I mean, maybe no cursing, no sex? No actual gore? But there's quite a lot of violence which I was surprised about! And honestly, I really liked that about it. I really liked this and was honestly hard-pressed to differentiate it between an action-packed spy book for adults. Maybe I should start reading more spy books?! There's that non-fiction one right now by Amarylis Fox hmmm.ĪNYWAY. Plus, I do surprisingly like a lot of spy stories - Alias, Harriet, Homeland (problematic guilty pleasure?), American Spy, D.E.B.S., Code Named Verity, etc. I wanted a book I could suggest to boys (and mothers of boys who obviously have internalized misogyny) that had a girl protag. I am quite surprised by how much I liked this! A middle grade spy thriller? Very off-brand for me.

For the god who has sent her on this journey will not be satisfied until his power is absolute. But is the price of the throne too high? Because in order to achieve greatness, she must spurn the young man who loves her and exploit the callous magic that runs through her veins - sorcery fueled by eating the hearts of the recently killed. Growing up as a peasant in a forgotten village on the edge of the map, Xifeng longs to fulfill the destiny promised to her by her cruel aunt, the witch Guma, who has read the cards and seen glimmers of Xifeng's majestic future. But only if she embraces the darkness within her. The stars say she is destined for greatness, that she is meant to be empress of Feng Lu. The Wrath and the Dawn meets Snow White and the Huntsman in this dark and mystical East Asian fantasy reimagining of the Evil Queen legend about one peasant girl's quest to become empress.Įighteen-year-old Xifeng is beautiful. The key visual conceit is Annie’s world: black, comprising her sketchy self-image, objects she encounters rendered in a dull brown, things with which she has any kind of emotionally charged interaction (from her family to food) colored in sidewalk-chalk primaries. And more than Riel, it’s a work of immense and intimate emotional power, deeply touching and profoundly moving without ever growing maudlin or manipulative. It does so with none of the repetitive tics that marred cartoonist Joseph Lambert’s earlier work, here supplanted by the intensity of the story’s central challenge and Lambert’s own clarity of purpose in meeting it. Like Riel, it succeeds, it innovates, as comics as much as it does as biography. The Center for Cartoon Studies/Disney/Hyperion, March 2012īuy it from CCS neighbor the Norwich BookstoreĪ dual biography of deaf-blind Helen Keller and her teacher, mentor, guardian, and lifelong companion Annie Sullivan - whose own coming-of-age tale of overcoming near-blindness, abject poverty, orphanhood, loss, lack of education, and a generally piss-poor attitude is depicted in parallel with Annie’s better-known story - Annie Sullivan and the Trials of Helen Keller is the best comics biography since Chester Brown’s Louis Riel. The house, museum, campgrounds, motocross course, horse jumping arena, and a western town replica are within these boundaries. The road to the east and a meandering creek to the west define the ranch boundaries. The scent of flowers and groomed lawns drift in the air. Open all year, the grounds and woods abound with the natural colour and fragrance of Tennessee flowers. While the campground is still open this winter, it may be your last chance to visit and see it as Loretta left it. With the passing of Loretta Lynn earlier this fall, we can no longer be sure if the ranch, house, museum, and campgrounds where this country music legend lived and died will remain open to the public. The ranch is conveniently located seven miles north of interstate I40 in Tennessee and only 14 hours south of Toronto. Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, is up to the challenge. When heading south, finding unique and exciting campgrounds to park your trailers, fifth wheels, and motorhomes is always challenging. During the past 5 years, we have been trying to make sense of the over 5,000 soil fungal isolates that have arrived at our laboratory. In FungiAlert’s laboratory we know this from first-hand experience. 270 years later, we are not closer to an answer. In my opinion, it is a great book that triggers your imagination and makes you question fundamental philosophical and biological principles of life.Ĭarl Linneaus, the Swedish botanist who in 1751 formulated the modern taxonomic system wrote: “The Order of Fungi is still a Chaos, a scandal of art, no botanist knowing what a Species is and what is a Variety”. It also describes how this magical, undermined and neglected kingdom of life has shaped our planet and our society. This beautifully written book encapsulates the state of the art of our understanding of fungi. It gave me the same feeling of inquisitiveness that I felt when I embraced the discipline of microbiology during my undergraduate studies. I have recently finished reading “Entangled Life” by Merlin Sheldrake, regrettably, as it has opened my curiosity like no other book in recent years. Though Who Stole My Daughter doesn't seem to be based on any one specific incident, child abductions are unfortunately quite common. The film is, quite literally, a parent's worst nightmare. It's also what makes Lifetime Movies' latest film so terrifying, because while Who Stole My Daughter? isn't based on a true story, it certainly could be. What if something terrible happened to them? What if you never see them again? The questions plague your mind over and over again in a never-ending, relentless cycle. You don't have to be a parent to know that when a child goes missing, it's one of the scariest things that can happen. |
